Music can lighten you up when you're down. It can calm you down. It can give you courage, confidence or a motivation boost. It's a powerful tool.
I had music as a daily companion while growing up and if I had to describe that companion, I would say he was like a much older wise brother whose experience and knowledge I could listen to and profit from.
I learned how to smile, about the vietnam war, about domestic violence, about aging and dying, about growing up, about substance abuse (Dessa - The man I knew), about mental health (Dessa - Annabelle) and about the medicine industry (Watsky - Tears to diamonds) and an infinite number of small facts and ideas.
I highly recommend looking up (these) songs on https://genius.com which is an awesome way of learning more about the lyrics and about the topics they're portraying.
